May/June 2009
Originally, my son Marc and I booked a trip to Mt. Kailash in Tibet via Simikot in Nepal with
Kim Bannister from As the departure date moved closer,
however, different reasons did not make that trip doable, so we were looking for an
alternative. As Marc is in college and can only travel in the summer, Nepal was kind of out
of the question because of the monsoon, so we were thinking Ladakh. Kim convinced us
on a combination of a Markha Valley trek and a trek through the nomadic area of Ladakh.
Our travelling companion Graham from Sydney also was on board with the change to
Ladakh, so we were ready to go. I can only say good things about Kim, her staff and
Himalaya and highly recommend them and their trips if somebody is looking for an "off the
beaten path" trek.
We arrived in Delhi in the evening of May 28th, spend a day there, then did a triangle trip to
Agra and Jaipur. This trip was arranged by Dhruv Travels and I also can highly recommend
them. After that, we flew to Leh, the capital of Ladakh, where Kim met us and we spent a
couple of days acclimating before our 24 day trek started.
Below is a day to day diary of our trip with pictures:
